BORGONJA – AN ALMOST FORGOTTEN HIGH-QUALITY ISTRIAN VARIETY

Malvasia and Teran are definitely the trademarks of winemaking in Istria, but that does not mean they are the only quality indigenous varieties that thrive on Istrian red soil.

Borgonja is considered one of the oldest grape varieties and was long thought to originate from the French Gamay variety until laboratory research several years ago definitively confirmed that Borgonja actually traces its roots to the well-known Blaufränkisch variety.

Damjanić Winery is one of the few Istrian wine houses that still cultivates the black Borgonja variety, which we use in the production of our premium Borgonja Damjanić wine. Exceptionally drinkable due to its slightly lower alcohol content, strong aromas, and pleasant acidity, Borgonja will delight you with its harmony, seductive notes of forest fruits such as currants and raspberries, as well as its floral aroma and color reminiscent of violets in spring.

When it comes to culinary pairings, Borgonja is truly a versatile wine that easily complements various types of dishes, from pasta, lasagna, cheeses, cured meats, and spicy meat bites to tuna, sardines, and various other seafood specialties and delicacies.

Choose to visit Damjanić Winery and indulge in the irresistible flavors of premium and frequently awarded Istrian wines made from indigenous local and the finest international varieties.
