Tying and Repairing Vineyard Trellises

TYING FOLLOWS AFTER PRUNING

Tying secures the vine trunk and cane to the vineyard trellis to ensure stability and support new green shoots during the growing season.

FUŠKULIN – After vineyard pruning comes tying and repairing damaged vineyard trellises. Traditionally, willow twigs were used for tying, but today we use modern biodegradable (plastic or metal) ties that last one growing season. We apply the ties using tying machines—electric devices designed to facilitate work in vineyards, orchards, and nurseries.

Tying secures the part left as fruiting wood during pruning in forming the training system. We use the single-arm Guyot system, which consists of a spur and a cane (head). Tying secures the trunk and cane to the vineyard trellis to ensure stability and support new green shoots during the growing season.

After tying, we begin repairing the trellis.

Due to adverse conditions and the load of the vineyard itself, the wooden and wire trellis on which the vineyard is set becomes damaged, requiring repairs during winter. Trellis repair consists of tightening and replacing wires. Where necessary, at locations where posts have deteriorated, they are replaced with acacia posts.

After that, wire supports on the posts can be repaired. If mechanical vineyard work has damaged the anchor screw (vineyard anchor) that maintains wire tension and the entire vineyard trellis, it is replaced with a new one along with the wire.
