WHY DO WOMEN ENJOY WHITE WINE MORE?

The Wall Street Journal took on the task of investigating a question that troubles us all: why women tend to opt for a glass of white wine rather than red. The arguments in their mini-study are mostly humorous, but they also included medical facts.

The author of the article, Lettie Teague, presented the results of a mini-survey conducted among her colleagues and friends. The reasons for choosing white over red wine are diverse and generally very specific.

The women she interviewed most frequently cited health reasons as primary for always choosing white wine. One friend mentioned that heartburn was the reason she stopped drinking red wine, and white wine does not bother her at all. Another friend switched to white wine when she realized that red wine, especially those high in tannins like Cabernet, caused her severe headaches. She now drinks Spanish white wines and an occasional glass of Pinot Noir, the author stated, also mentioning another colleague who finds red wine “heavy and unpleasant” compared to the pleasant freshness of white wine.

There is also a theory that migraines are likely the most significant reason for women’s preference for white wines. Migraines are more common in women than in men, and red wine, for reasons not yet fully understood, can act as a trigger for migraines.

Furthermore, only women use the word “refreshing” when describing wine, while men seek entirely different qualities in wine, primarily strong and robust aromas.

That women prefer white over red wine is also confirmed by an expert with undeniable wine knowledge, Liz Thach, Master of Wine:

– Individuals with hypersensitive taste buds are more common among women than men. Highly sensitive individuals often dislike wines with strong tannins and pronounced acidity. They are drawn to sweeter, white, and rosé wines.

The author of the study offered another witty explanation for women’s preference for white wines: white wines do not stain carpets!
